A key milestone in the journey towards implementing the eFTI Regulation has been achieved. On 9 January 2025, the first Implementing and Delegated Acts of the eFTI Regulation came into effect. This development represents a crucial advancement towards fully digital freight transport across the European Union.
As highlighted in the European Commission’s recent press release, these acts provide essential guidelines for implementation, enabling Member States to begin building the necessary IT systems to meet the eFTI framework’s future requirements.
What’s Next for eFTI?
With these foundational acts now in force, the next stages in eFTI’s implementation are as follows:
- Starting January 2025: Member States can start the development of IT infrastructure to support eFTI-compliant transport data.
- By September 2025: the European Commission is expected to finalize additional specifications, outlining detailed technical and functional requirements for IT systems, as well as the certification processes for eFTI platforms and service providers.
- From January 2026: eFTI platforms and service providers can begin operational preparations, while authorities start accepting electronic freight data stored on certified platforms.
- From 9 July 2027, at last,the eFTI Regulation will be fully enforced, requiring all Member States to accept digital freight transport information through certified platforms.
