Malta continues to make steady progress in its eFTI journey, with the latest national roadmap update showing important advances in technical preparation, stakeholder engagement and implementation planning ahead of the 9 July 2027 go-live date.
The national eFTI Roadmap has now been fully prepared and presented, providing a clear framework for Malta’s transition towards an interoperable digital freight environment. Two specialised consultants have joined the national team to support the technical and operational development, while bilateral discussions with potential eFTI Gate developers have helped refine possible integration pathways and identify viable solutions.
A Preliminary Market Consultation, carried out between February and March 2026, attracted strong industry interest and provided useful feedback for the next steps. Malta is now in the final drafting phase of its national tender, with readiness checks underway and publication targeted for the end of September 2026.
Technical preparations are also moving forward. The Maltese team is gathering the information required to begin testing with EU-provided testbeds, followed by live testing with available eFTI Gates. Potential cooperation with Italy is also being explored.
Another important area of work concerns the possible integration of the Single Maritime Window with the eFTI Gate. A pilot involving Pionira and Maltese hauliers is being planned, while a second pilot based on short-sea transport with Baltic partners is under consideration.
Malta is also assessing the possibility of becoming a Conformity Assessment Body (CAB), following discussions with the National Accreditation Board.
At national level, stakeholder engagement has continued to expand. Two workshops have already been organised: one involving authorities including Police, Transport Malta, ERA, Ports, CPD, MITA, MDIA and Customs, and another dedicated to transport operators and other relevant stakeholders.
Malta has also remained active at European level, participating in the eDANOS brainstorming session in Brussels and planning its presence at Connecting Europe Days 2026 and the Munich Fair 2027 as part of the eFTI4ALL Consortium. The country is also encouraging strong eFTI visibility at the ITF Summit 2027.
Communication and awareness-raising activities are developing in parallel. These include participation in children’s podcasts, TV programmes and articles, as well as the preparation of informative videos for prime-time broadcasting. Work is also underway on Malta’s second national eFTI newsletter, while a national conference is being planned for April 2027.
Malta continues to contribute to EU working party meetings, supporting both technical and communication discussions, while building on the experience gained from hosting the eFTI4ALL Consortium Meeting in November 2025.
All these activities are supporting one clear objective: ensuring that Malta is fully prepared for 9 July 2027, when the eFTI Regulation will become fully applicable.
